A popular décor trend, stretched canvas prints come in all shapes and sizes, patterns, pics and even words.
At Orms, we can print whatever your heart desires directly onto canvas: from holiday snaps to old family photos, graphic designs, inspirational quotes, your children’s art … the list is endless! After printing, we stretch the flat canvas over a 23 mm or 50 mm thick wooden frame so that it is ready for hanging.
Canvas prints are a versatile way to decorate your home because even if the prints don’t match 100%, they’ll still look as if they go together if they’re all printed on canvas. You can achieve the same trick by choosing the same style of framing for flat canvases!
Stretched Canvas vs Unstretched Canvas: What’s The Difference?
Stretched canvas prints are printed and then stretched around a frame, whereas unstretched canvas prints are simply printed onto a flat piece of canvas, which can then be rolled up and transported easily. Generally speaking, most people will opt for Stretched Canvas Printing, because it represents a complete product which can be hung upon arrival at your home or exhibition.

Q&A with Luzelle Booyens
- Inkjet Printing Specialist
Can I order a custom-sized canvas as opposed to the standard A-sizes?
Yes! I can print and stretch any custom-sized canvases. However, there are maximum print sizes for our two canvas options:
- Standard canvas: 1500 x 18 mm
- Premium canvas: 1380 mm x 10 m
What is the difference between Standard and Premium Canvas?
Our standard canvas has a smooth, satin finish, whereas our premium canvas is a fine art canvas with a matte finish.
What is the difference between stretched and unstretched canvas?
A stretched canvas has been stretched around a frame, where as an unstretched canvas is the flat piece of canvas.
What is ready-to-hang canvas?
This is a complete canvas product, your canvas print stretched on a 30 mm stretcher frame, that can be hung directly onto the wall by the frame.
What is a stretcher frame?
This is the wooden frame around which the canvas print is stretched.
What are 23 and 50 mm stretcher frames?
These are the different frame thicknesses I use for customised canvas sizes – once your canvas has been printed, you can choose to have it stretched on a 23 or 50 mm frame. These frames are sold separately from the flat canvas.
What wood do you use for the 23 and 50 mm stretcher frames?
They are cut from Obeche wood, also known as African Maple.
How far from the wall will my canvas stand out?
The size of the stretcher frame, 23 mm, 30 mm or 50mm, is the distance that your canvas will stand out from the wall.
Will the colours on my canvas print be the same as what I see on my monitor?
I try to ensure that your canvas print is as close as possible to the colours you see on your monitor but I cannot guarantee an exact colour match. That’s why I always recommend running a test print, especially with large canvas jobs, to make sure you’re happy with the colour before the whole job is finished.
Will my canvas fade over time?
The longevity of your printed canvas depends on the type of canvas you choose. While the inks we use are archival; satin canvas is not archival whereas premium canvas is archival. The print may fade and the inks discolour after 70–100 years if kept away from direct sunlight.
How do I clean my canvas?
It’s important to remember the type of canvas you’ve chosen:
- Premium canvas: dust it with a soft, dry cloth. Never use a damp cloth.
- Satin canvas: dust it with a soft, dry cloth. If your canvas requires deeper cleaning you can use damp cloth.
What printers and inks do you use?
- Standard Canvas: Epson Stylus Pro GS6000 using Epson UltraChrome eco-solvent inks.
- Premium Canvas: Epson Stylus Pro 11880 using Epson UltraChrome K3 inks.
What does eco-solvent mean?
Eco-solvent means the inks are safe for home use and don’t leave an awful smell.
