Giclée Prints/Inkjet

Giclée Prints/Inkjet

The first choice for fine art reproductions, giclée (pronounced zhee-clay) refers to an individually produced, high-resolution, high-quality fine art digital print made on a specialized inkjet printer.

Giclée literally means “to spray or spread” and refers to the way the ink is deposited on the surface of paper. Tiny droplets, of varying size, are deposited with extreme precision onto the surface of the desired paper. The result: an image of exceptional quality, offering brighter colours, crisper details and long-lasting colour.

Giclée prints can be printed on any number of substrates from watercolour paper to canvas.

Archival properties:
Giclée is an archival process, using both archival media and inks; so your print is guaranteed to last between 80–100 years, with the exception of direct sunlight, storage and most importantly, the way the prints are handled.

Turnaround time:

2 – 3 working days

Q&A with Lauren Smit

An authority on fine art printing, Lauren is an expert in archival fine art paper selection and skilled in retouching.
What printer do you use?

The Epson Stylus Pro 11880 and Epson Stylus Pro 9900.

What ink do you use?

Epson UltraChrome K3 inks.

How does it work?

Here’s where it gets a bit technical: Our printer produces a perceived resolution of 2880 dpi. The printer head features 360 micro-fine nozzles per colour, delivering incredibly sharp, grain-free images at ultra-high speed. The 8-colour, pigment-based ink set has the widest possible gamut for a fantastic range of expression so that you’ll see subtle shadows and highlights when printing in black and white.

What kind of paper should I use?

It really boils down to your personal preference. You are welcome to bring in your images, view them on screen, and I can advise you on which paper to choose.

But these are some of my favourites:

Black & white images: Premium Satin, Watercolour, Hahnemühle Photo Rag (if not overly black)
Saturated black images: Premium Satin, Watercolour
Vibrant colours: Premium Satin, Watercolour, Hahnemühle Photo Rag
Pastel colours: Watercolour, Somerset Velvet, Hahnemühle German Etching
Illustrations: Watercolour, Hahnemühle Photo Rag
Bringing out textures: Hahnemühle German Etching, Somerset Velvet
Reproduction of paintings: Canvas or closest-match media to the original artwork.

Do giclée prints need special care?

Absolutely! All prints should be handled with the utmost of care, I recommend wearing gloves.

Do you provide ICC profiles for soft-proofing?

I offer test prints as the ICC profiles I use have been custom-made for our printer. This ensures that you’re happy before I go ahead with printing your full-sized images.

What format should my image be in?

An uncompressed TIFF file, but I can print anything that I can open in Photoshop. Please remember to save your files in an 8-bit Adobe RGB colour space with a resolution of 300 dpi.

How should I get my images to you?

Bring them in on a CD, DVD or flash drive or send your files to me via email ( filesize restriction of 10mb), Dropbox, or any file-transfer website like WeTransfer or Hightail (previously YouSendIt).
