What is custom framing?

Custom framing is the fine art of building a structural and elemental design around a focal point.
Each handmade frame contains several customisable features that help wrap an artwork or object in different shapes, colours and contours to draws one’s attention toward the piece.
There are also several other factors involved in custom framing such as the required conservation of artworks or objects over time.

What can I frame?

Custom framing possibilities are close to endless. With the help of our professional framing artisans and experienced consultants, almost anything can be framed.

Our team is highly skilled in handling any fine art prints and canvasses but we also thrive on providing custom framing solutions for any three-dimensional items you may bring in – no matter the size or complexity.

We have expertly framed both painted and printed canvas, historical stonework, jewellery, deconstructed watches, running shoes, model cars, vinyl records, tape cassettes, letters, shells, bones, medals and even food, to name a few.

Framing can add instant value to anything in your home or collection as well as provide protective housing and a means to display it in your space. A little object such as a pretty shell found on the beach can be turned into a work of art by surrounding it with an accentuating platform on which to shine. Captured a special moment on your mobile camera? Have the moment sealed in a time capsule to cherish every day.

How long will it take to frame my picture?

Custom framing generally takes 5-7 working days throughout the year and can see an extension to 10 working days in peak season from October to January. Should your product be finished earlier, you will receive a notification to let you know that it has been completed.

It is advisable to plan ahead and be mindful of the amount of time required for completion to avoid disappointment. In case of urgencies, an express fee can be allocated to ensure completion on specific dates and within deadline – where possible.

Our team work on a dynamic production schedule that adapts to the incoming workload. Our consultants are always aware of the next available “day out” of the factory for your completed works.

Because we rely on so many variables within the custom framing spectrum, it is possible to run into small delays whilst sourcing materials for your build. We can only ask for your patience within these periods – please rest assured that we always do our absolute best to complete work as soon as possible.

Will my picture be ready to hang on the wall?

Every frame is finished as a ready-to-hang item. Our team selects the correct hanging type and mechanism for your work. They will consider points such as frame weight, size, type and application. We also offer security hanger systems for items of value and can produce custom hanging solutions for any project.

Where is the best place to hang my frame?

Each space is unique and is affected by its own set of environmental and structural factors. Our consultants may not be aware of these and it is important to be mindful of placement and consider these points before hanging your frame.

  • Consider a professional picture hanging team to hang your frame. Our consultants can advise on which team is suited to your specific requirements.

  • Depending on the size of your frame, you may consider hanging it yourself. If so, take the time to study your wall and use the correct tools and fittings suited to your frames hanging mechanisms. You want to make sure that the wall is strong enough to carry the weight of your frame and that there are no electrical outputs or cables running across the area when drilling or hammering. Wear gloves and goggles – safety first!

  • Will the frame be subjected to direct sunlight? UV light can cause damage to your artwork/item over time. It can cause certain papers to yellow and damage paints and other materials. Consider our range of museum grade glass, all of which offer UV protection and will block 99% of harmful UV rays.

  • Will the frame be subject to severe changes in temperature? Extreme heat and cold, or quick alternation between the two, can cause paper-based artworks and natural woods to react in negative ways. Both are sensitive to environmental changes and could buckle, warp or discolour in extreme cases.

  • Is the environment damp or humid? Natural wood and paper products have “open” fibres and grains which mean that they can retain and hold damp/moisture. The fibres react to this and may cause visible buckling or warping.

    • Avoid hanging on recently plastered or painted walls.

    • If the frame is destined for your kitchen or bathroom, a synthetic frame may be your best bet. It is made of plastic composites and are not as susceptible to moisture damage.

What type of wood is used to make my frame?

When it comes to natural wood mouldings, we make use of an African hardwood called Obeche - otherwise known as Wawa. The wood originates from West Africa and serves as the general base for all frame construction locally. Obeche, in its natural form, has a soft cream tone that will darken slightly with age. It serves as a wonderful base for all show-grain and stain finishes and is often used in its natural form for a clean and light wood tone.

We also have several hardwoods available, namely: Kiaat; Maple; Ash; Beech; and Oak. These frame mouldings are available on request - Kiaat being the most readily available and popular option due to it’s warm and unique tones.

It is important to note that all hardwoods, as a natural product, can have tonal variations in wood colour.

I need a specific colour for my frame. Can I pick any colour?

Several frame mouldings allow for a spray finish. Our master sprayer has an expert eye for colour and can mix a colour to match a physical colour sample. It is best to bring in a physical segment of colour to hand to the consultant – they will be able to gauge whether the required colour is possible or not. Generally, extremely bright colours or fluorescents are not achievable but in some cases these pre-mixed colours can be sourced.

We also have a variety of stains available in a range of neutral and natural hardwood colours. Our stains are all hand mixed by our professional stainer. The range of colours have been perfected and curated by our inhouse team.

What is the biggest size you can frame?

Regarding size, there are many variables at play. Each stock item comes in various lengths and sizes. Our consultants are trained to recognize maximum sizes for each type of frame and application. With varying sizes, the frame type and styles are also affected. Moulding types, glazing and hanging all need to be adjusted according to the size to ensure structural integrity.

Generally, the maximum size of most applications goes up to 2000x3000mm. This is subject to type of moulding, glazing and artwork mounting type. Our creative team have worked on many frames larger than this size but there are many restrictions to be considered. If you have a large size project, speak to our consultants for more information on limitations.

It is important to note that the truck, van or any other vehicle size, needs to be considered to make sure it can accommodate the size of your frame. Our delivery team contains delivery motorcycles, a closed truck and a van for the transport of your goods.

What is Archival or “Conservation” Framing?

Archival framing addresses 3 issues in the framing process:

  1. Acidity. Many products are acidic in nature, due to certain processes within their manufacturing or as a result of their natural composition. Acids react to chemicals in inks and papers, under certain conditions, and cause discolouration and “spotting”.

  2. Moisture. Moisture from humid conditions or rapid temperature changes acts as an enabler for unwanted chemical reactions within the frame. Excessive moisture can also cause warping and buckling within the paper which is extremely difficult to remove once it has set in.

  3. UV Rays. Harmful UV rays do damage to most of our planet in varying degrees. Items without adequate protection may weaken, discolour, crack and disintegrate from prolonged exposure over lengths of time. The most noticeable being discolouration or “yellowing” of papers. This can happen surprisingly fast if it receives any direct sun.

All elements within the frame that may come into contact with the artwork can be replaced with archival substitutes. Archival products are neutral and completely acid free. Frames may also be sealed, upon request, with silicone and waterproof sheeting from the rear of the frame to stop the entry of moisture into the frame. Lastly, UV protective glass can be installed to block all harmful UV rays. Our museum glass range blocks up to 99% of UV rays and are completely optically clear.

I can see brown spotting across my print, what is it?

This phenomenon is called “foxing” and is the result of chemical burning. It is due to high levels of acidity and is normally seen with older prints that have been attached to or come into contact with non-archival elements. An artwork fitted with a standard, non-archival mountboard and backing might look fine for the next 5 - 15 years, but eventually, moisture will react with the other acidic elements within the frame. The result, a chemical reaction occurs around and on top of the substrates which causes “burn” marks and other discolouration to appear.

My artwork or print is yellowing, what is causing this?

This is caused by one of two things:

  1. Harmful UV rays. Exposure to sunlight causes a relatively uniform yellowing and discolouration of paper. This can be avoided by using a UV protective glass. Our range of glass blocks up to 99% of damaging UV rays.

  2. Acidity. Acidity causes yellowing and discolouration on paper and fabrics. It is characterised by more irregular spotting or yellowing from certain edges inwards – these are most likely high-contact points where the paper is closest or directly joined to acidic, non-archival elements. We stock a range of acid free boards that are used in our archival framing processes to address this issue and give you a longer lasting product.

My artwork is creased and/or wavy. Can you make it flat when framing?

Paper has a life of its own. Heat and moisture both play a role in the physical form of paper. In humid environments the paper can tend to forms waves which are, in most cases, irreversible. Secondly, paper that has been folded or roughly handled can have several creases, curves and indents across the paper surface.

Different segments around the world have different opinions on the presentation of this type of waved, or irregular surface artwork. Traditionally, it is best to allow the paper to move and “breathe” but for display purposes, we often get request to flatten the artwork. Below are more details on the two available processes:

  1. Strapping. This is our recommended option for items of any sentimental or financial value. An archival form of mounting. The paper is strapped via archival adhesive tape, from the back of the work, to a mount board.

This is the safest option in terms of preserving artwork value as well as the chance of successful reframing in years to come. This is our recommended option. The print can easily be re-strapped in future should paper warping become too much and it can be safely removed by slitting the small archival straps on the rear – leaving no damage to the front of the artwork and absolute minimal damage to the rear.

However, the paper will not be pulled absolutely flush against the mounting board. The result is a very natural mount feeling – one where paper forms, curves, creases and kinks are still retained. It is essentially a true and traditional form of mounting and presents the art “as is”.

  2. Pasting or mounting with film. For display purposes, you may want your creased or wavy artwork to be flattened. This process does carry risk. As your paper has expanded and contracted with folding, rolling, waving, etc., it has essentially lost its original form and has stretched and grown, on a minor level, into different directions.

Once flattened, this additional “extra” growth area has nowhere to go and folded creasing occurs. This is irreversible as our methods of pasting and film mounting are permanent. This process requires full adhesion of the paper to the mounting substrate which cannot be removed.

Ultimately, it is your decision but you need to be aware of the risks involved in flattening a creased or wavy artwork. Our consultants will be able to advise on the best solution upon viewing of the paper.

I want to replace the window mount or backing on my existing frame, is that possible?

Yes, most frames can easily be opened and refitted with new contents. Keep in mind that the artwork is attached to the mount board or backing – this can be done in several permanent or semi-permanent ways and we will need to assess this to see if removal is possible.

If this existing frame is currently hanging on your wall, please ensure to ask your consultant to keep the hanging mechanism in the same position. For safety purposes, our team may move the hanging mechanisms as existing holes may have lost their structural integrity due to removal.

Can I use my existing frame for a new print/artwork?

Breathe new life into your old, existing frames - absolutely.

Most frames can easily be opened from the back for refitting of new prints/artwork. This is subject to sight and assessment of the frame. If the frame is in good structural condition, we shouldn’t have any trouble.

Upon refitment, we will assess the glazing to make sure there are no visible scratches or cracks and we will often move the hanging fixtures into fresh holes on the back of the frame to ensure that they are stable – keep this in mind if the existing frame has already been hung on your wall. We do our best to “touch-up” existing frames but in some cases the frame material does not allow for this.

The glass on my frame has broken, what do I do?

If the glass on your frame has shattered, carefully remove any loose shards of glass and then turn the frame face down onto a sheet, towel or sturdy backing. This ensures that the remaining glass tilts and falls away from the artwork. If a frame is left standing upright or face-up, the glass will tilt towards the artwork/image and can cause scratching and cutting. Once all loose shards have been removed, place it face down on your chosen backing and secure for transportation.

If the glass has cracked but is still intact, carefully tape an X shape along the face of the glass – any adhesive tape should work. This will help keep the pieces together should it crack and shatter further with transportation. Turn the frame upside down within a sheet, towel or on some form of cardboard backing and secure.

Please bring the frame in to store so that we can assess and quote on your re-glazing options.

My frame has been damaged, is it possible to repair?

Basic repair work can be performed on frames – it all depends on the extent of the damage. Wood frames can be re-sanded to reduce light blemishes and small dings and nicks can be filled with the suitable materials before respray or staining. Synthetic mouldings, on the other hand, normally call for a replacement.

Depending on your budget constraints, we can advise on the best possible solution. Keep in mind that elements of your existing frame can be reused. Artwork backing, mount boards, glass and hanging can all be upcycled into their new surroundings.

I have found wood borer beetles in my frame, what should I do?

Place your frame in a sealed plastic bag (it is advised to tape the edges) and send it to us for reassessment and a quote on replacement of the frame moulding. Keep in mind that all other elements can safely be upcycled into your new frame.

Wood borer occupy most back yards or wooded areas around South Africa. Wood borer only feast on “dead”, dry wood so furniture, sculptures, wood flooring and frames are all targeted.

Our local suppliers fumigate all wood product before it reaches their warehouses and eventually our factory floor. Fumigation at the supplier premises as well as our factory is done with gas in sealed containment areas. The gas dissipates within 24 hours leaving a non-toxic, chemical free product. Lengths of wood are individually quality checked before we process them to ensure that there is no trace of any defects or wood borer beetle.

Unfortunately, wood borer is airborne and it is easy for them to infiltrate any area. They tend to leave most chemically treated items alone but the downside of this is that they will target untreated or less toxic items.

Orms does not carry the responsibility of replacement (after 3 months from date of purchase) once wood borer beetle is found within your frame but we will do our best to assist you with the refitting of your artwork into its new frame.

What types of glazing (glass) are available?

Glass not only serves to protect and conserve your work but the visual finishing can also be rather spectacular.

We offer several types of glazing - be open to discussing your options with a consultant. Being able to see and touch the various options alongside your work goes a long way in helping along your decision.

  • Clear glass. This is considered our standard glazing option. It will be quoted as default and is the most cost-effective version of glazing available. Our clear glass is sourced locally, is of high quality and finishes off any frame beautifully.

  • Plexiglass. A transparent thermoplastic product – a shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Plexiglass has a lot of uses but it is generally used for larger frames where glass will become unstable. It is also popular for frames that require shipment as the glass cannot be shattered in transit.

  • Gallery Plexi. Highest quality Plexiglass available. Crystal-clear, shatter-resistant alternative to glass with the added benefit of 100% UV protection for conservation.

  • 99% UV Protective Museum glass (aka UV99). A conservational glass which provides 99% UV Protection whilst remaining optically clear.

  • Anti-reflective 99% UV Protective Museum glass (aka AR99). An anti-reflective conservation glass which provides superb optical clarity in addition to 99% UV protective qualities. The glass is designed to minimize all reflections on the glass surface. It aims to provide a pure-view experience when viewing artwork under different lighting situations.

Does my artwork need UV protective glass?

Whether a piece needs UV Glass or not depends to some extent on the way it is produced. Ultra Violet light can not only fade an image, it can harm the paper over time as well. If the piece is of particular personal, historical or financial value, it is recommended that UV Glass be used. Below are some rule-of-thumb judgment calls on some different types of work.

Whether you require UV protective glass is all related to what you are framing. UV (Ultra Violet) rays do damage to all life and substances over time. Sensitive substrates such as paper, ink, certain paint and fabrics, can start showing signs of damage much faster. Refer to the guideline below for more detail regarding general artwork:

  • General Consumer Prints. Consumer prints include anything from movie posters to newspapers, magazines, flyers and other short run items. Most of these products are printed on digital or lithographic paper stocks which do have quite a lengthy life span but are more susceptible to UV damage. Papers will start yellowing in a short amount of time if exposed to UV rays and inks/toners will start showing signs of cracking.

  • Giclee Prints. Giclee is a term used to describe fine-art, archival inkjet printing. This process is paired with high quality archival papers that have a longer lifespan than general consumer papers. The process is archival but UV protective glass can be employed to further conserve and protect the work from damage over a longer period of time. Archival papers, in general, slow down the discolouration of prints.

  • Screen-prints. Screen-printing can be compared to the archival quality of the Giclee process. However, the process is slightly more robust where the ink and print is concerned. The one exception is that the paper, depending on the type, is still vulnerable to UV damage. Check that the screen-print was printed on a good quality archival paper.

  • Paintings. In general, oil and acrylic paintings can be framed without glass. This is because most artists will make use of a sealant/varnish over the paint which acts as a protective barrier. These can normally be cleaned or restored without considerable damage to the artwork. However, watercolour and other forms of paint are not generally sealed. In this case, it is highly recommended to use UV protective glass to avoid UV damage to the piece. If possible, speak to the artist about the archival nature of the work. When in doubt, use UV protective glass to protect your investment.

Can I frame without glass?

Framing without glass is common practice for oil and some acrylic paintings. These paintings are generally sealed with a protective varnish which acts as a defensive layer to protect the original paint underneath. Another common frame that features no glass is a canvas frame. A canvas frame has no frontal protection and only frames the sides and backs of the canvas.

Some of our products such as Plexiglass prints or Diasec already have an acrylic layer protecting the artwork. The same applies to our direct-to-media prints which are printed using UV-stable and hard-wearing inks which do not require a protective covering. These artworks effectively replace the glass component in the build of the frame.

Is it possible to safely ship/courier my frame?

Following the correct guidelines, a frame can safely be shipped both nationally and internationally. We partner with experienced shipping agencies and crating manufacturers to ensure that parcels arrive in perfect condition at their destination.

All frames are securely wrapped in ample protective packaging material. We ensure that all corners are covered sufficiently to avoid any scuffing in transit. The frame is then packaged securely in a custom-built crate. All excess room within the crate is filled with impact softening materials and then sealed before shipment.

There are many variables to consider when shipping internationally – speak to one of our consultants for more information regarding the different processes and requirements. It is also important to note that international shipping will require a fumigation certificate if the product contains any wood elements.

When shipping is required on large frames, our consultants will recommend shatterproof Plexiglass glazing. Arranging framing and artwork repairs in a foreign country can be a daunting task – it is best to consider all factors involved and make use of an experienced consultant to assist with the shipment.
